Alcohol is a drug, why is it legal?

I posted this before and people said where’s your stats, alcohol is worse than most other drugs, but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Why is alcohol legal and not other reality altering substances. Don’t tell me because illicit drugs are often cut with unknown chemicals because if they were legal they wouldn’t be cut.
