How can I find out whether some items are antiques, and what they are?

My mother has a a very old china teapot that only says ‘Made in England’, and an equally old set of salt and pepper shakers that may be silver. I’m trying to research this for her, not so much to find out their value as to find out what she actually has. http://bit.ly/pUKEYU
